On the second box, how was it beneficial to look at the other designs to improve your design?
Is this an assignment that should be included in the Intro to Engineering Classes in the future? Why/Why not?

I think this project showed how differences and restriction in what materials are used are a big part of engineering.
the second box was definately better and it was beneficial to change the design. however, the materials were not as easy to use/not as effective.
I think this project was beneficial, but definately tedious. it helped show how materials and design are both important in the design process
Creating a box that could hold up to 175 pounds was a great way to show what engineer focuses on in a day to day basis. It has completly changed my thought on engineering, instead of just making the design plans, they do create the plans then test then modify and test again. It was helpful to see the other designs in the fact that you could see what worked and what didn't. Most people would conclude from the first test that the circular colums where much stronger in the box than triangles were. I would include this project in future Intro to Engineering classes, because it causes people to rethink the way that they design the box for the task at hand.
I don't think that this project changed too much about my thought of engineering. It definitely helped me understand the design process of engineering. But for the most part, I felt like it was just a fun warm up to get us to enjoy the desing process before getting into the harder more complex stuff.
On the second box, Jordan and I went on a limb and designed a unique and complex box completely different than any box in the first trial. Our first box overloaded to begin with and if everyone was going to take the ideas from the successful boxes, that would mean everyone would make the same box for trial 2. We thought we would be creative and design a different box than anyone elses but still using the vertical columns as support.
Yes, this project should stay in the curriculum because of it is a great introduction project for the beginning of the semester. It properly introduced the design process, taught us about designing and structures and how we, as engineers, would have to create the strongest box possible out of certain materials. It was also very fun and entertaining, which is a good way to gain interest in a new topic.
This project changed my thinking about engineering because it gave a glimpse at what real engineers must do with there projects. Engineers must test different materials and designs to see which model will work best which is essentially what we also did.
On the second box we did view other designs, but they did not influence our box too much. This is becasue we already knew that we were going to use rolled columns similar to our 1st design.
this assignment should be included in the future intro to engineering classes becasue it takes you through the design process, and shows you why it is good to test different materials and designs.
i think that this project showed how a new side of engineering because this time we had many more restrictions jsut like you would in the real world.
it was a good idea to take a look at other peoples designs after the first box project because it gave us a chance to see what designs worked better so that we could improve this time.
i would recomend this project to be done again in other classes becasue it gives the students a second chance to do better after seeing some other designs.
This project showed that there is engineering in basic items such as a paper box. It also showed that many designs can be used to develop a better product.
By looking at designs that previously held the most weight, we could implement similar ideas to better our box.
This project should be in future classes, but take up only 1 week. It's a good intro to engineering for the class.
1. This project changed the way i think about engineers because it showed how they have to be able to use their resources wisely and not waste them.
2. Looking at other designs really helped us out. Our first box held VERY little and when we looked at the design we were able to see why. All the boxes that held alot were tight roled cyleders ours was triangles.
3. Yes it is fun and hands on. Also it makes us think like engineers because of the restriction on resources we had.
Who would of ever thought that paper could hold upwards of 180 pounds. This is an example of how engineering can be used in life to make the simplest things great. Liz and I realized quickly that cylinders were the most structually sound with the materials available. Also, the bonding agent wasn't as important to the over all strength of the box as the desgin was.
This project was beneficial because it made us as a class think and solve a problem using critical thinking and as a Engineer.
This project change my thinking that there are some really good was to increase the strength of an abject just by making them into columns for example.
well when you look at the ones that did well you can what you did wrong and on what you need to improve on your design. You also get to see the techniques and designs that really worked.
Yes bc its a lot of fun making these boxes and showing what design skills we have.

This project changed my view on engineering because I realized the logic and creativity involved in it. It was extremely challenging to create a box only out of paper with limited resources that could hold over 175 pounds. This challenge made me realize that this is the type of challenge that engineers go through daily.
After looking at other people's boxes, it was beneficial to see that cylinders were a very strong structure to place inside a box... especially putting cylinders together. However, looking at other people's boxes didn't help as much as I thought because there were new guidelines on the second box... challenging our cretivity and reasoning further.
I think this project should definately be included in other Inro to Engineering classes because it challenges people to expand their creativity and ability to reason and lets them experience what engineers go through daily.
This particular project did not really change my concept of engineering it did show me though that before you build something you should take into great consideration how and what you are going to make your project out of and how to design it so it functions the most efficiently and cost effective.
It was not really beneficial at all to look at the other well preforming boxes because the first boxes had different regulations than the second plus the first boxes were usually just glue blocks. So you may want to have both boxes with the same requirements.
I would keep this because it shows the importance of supporting structures and were to put your structures in the overall building. In the future instead of testing two boxes text each of the different support structures. Then build a boz.
This projsect illustrated how the engineering process can make things possible. I didn't think we could construct a paper box that would hold 200 pounds.
It was interesting to look at the other designs and how successful each one was. We already had an idea that pillars were strongest and had an idea in mind.
Yes, this project should be included in the engineering class in the future because it allows students to figure out the engineering process and be creative and logical in creating designs.
